Mood of the Month | With Liberty and Justice For All

independence day 2012

I rarely get political here, I mean it is a FASHION blog, but allow me to indulge for only a brief moment before returning to my usual spiel on how to look great with minimal effort and money spent.

As an American, I have never been more proud, hurt, confused, angry, disheartened, and inspired by my fellow countrymen than I have been in the past few weeks. There have been shootings, churches burning, age old arguments rekindled, and Donald Trump being well Donald Trump. Through all the bigotry, ignorance, and madness, there have been glimpses of hope, rationality, and a promise of a better tomorrow.  Conversations with the power to change our country’s narrative around race, sexual preference, immigration have been sparked, and thanks to the Supreme Court, ALL of my friends can get married from sea to sea well before I do.

Whether or not you agree with some of the changes taking place in America, we can all agree that the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” have never been more timely and necessary than they have in a while.

Between the hot dogs, fireworks, and day drinking, remember that fundamentally we are all equal and entitled to a life of freedom, love, and happiness, no matter our race, religion, country of origin, sexual preference, gender identity or whatever other superficial means of labeling and grouping us we can come up with.

    I like your thoughts on a life of freedom and what it means. America has gone through a lot recently, and like you sometimes I applaud us and other times I shake my head in disappointment. I hope whatever moves we make next we understand its for the citizens of America and better world.

      Exactly! Sometimes we forget that America is the people–all of the people, right, wrong, insane, and insanely cool. I think we also forget that in the grand scheme of things the US is still just a teenager that has a lot of growing and learning to do.
