Sometimes, in life, shit happens. When shit happens all at once, that’s when you should stop and take inventory. In the past three years, I have been fired from three jobs–through no fault of my own–lost two business partners and one boyfriend, and been to two different therapists who think I need to chill the fuck out and make new friends. I have watched as my life path as been redirected and redirected and redirected, only to emerge with a job that pays the bills but doesn’t feed my soul, and the knowledge that every little thing is going to be just fine. Eventually.
Back in 2010, when I was writing for three blogs, working as a visual merchandiser and sometimes stylist, I launched Gamine with a friend. Our intention was to merge our love of art, music, high fashion, and streetwear into a platform that was part online magazine, part shop for girls who embraced our effortless around the way girl lifestyle. Along the way we picked up writers, outside ideas, and another partner. I picked up a job in wholesale apparel sales, a few more writing credits, brand consulting clients, and shifted creative control of my dream to someone else. No bueno. Eventually, friends broke up, jobs were lost, and I was left standing at the counter at Nordstoms pissed at my partner for quitting our site in the middle of a redesign that would never happen.
I’m glad it didn’t happen. I’m actually ecstatic. The moment I got the email saying our partnership was through, I was pissed but for the first time in a long time I was being handed back the reigns in my life. I wasn’t tied to anyone, no lovers, no friends to compromise with. I was able to sink or swim on my own accord, and that’s what I’m doing. The good thing is, I know how to swim like a champ in a teeny bikini without even getting my hair wet.
Coming full circle, I hate that phrase but I couldn’t think of anything better, I am back to blending my love of art, music, high fashion, streetwear, and doling out unsolicited advice with my passion for uncovering the latest and greatest trends, brands, and things you need in your closet.
