#MonthlyMotivation Self-Care is Bullshit

self- care

News flash: I work a ton. When I’m not at work, I’m blogging, or hustling freelance work to make ends wave at each other. Since there are only 24hrs in a day, and I need to sleep, having time for myself is rare. Perhaps that is why I firmly believe self-care is bullshit.

I may be exhausted as I type this, but I am of sound mind when I say our concept of self-care is bullshit. What started out simply as a way to prevent illness and promote health, is now a billion dollar business. Self-care is mimonsas and mani-pedis. Its ygoga retreats and juice cleanses. Its taking time off to come back to work ready to work harder, faster, and longer. Increasingly, self-care itself has become something we feel obligated to do to maintain our sanity. That is a major no beuno.

What kind of lives have we built that we constantly need to recover from them? What kind of society have we built that values working for a living over simply living? Going to the movies, taking a bath, unplugging from social media, those things are not luxuries, they are just life things. While there are some social policies that need to be put in place -*cough* closing the gender wage gap and raising the minimum wage *cough* – as individuals we need to stop glamourizing busyness. Working multpile jobs to make ends meet is not cool, it’s a sympotm of a society that refuses to pay people what they are worth. Being exhausted is not sexy, it is a signal from your body that you need to chill the fuck out. In that sense, self-care is bullshit.  We don’t need self-care, we need to ask ourselves are we living to work or working to live.

Exactly!! If you have a life that you constantly need to rest and recuperate from every weekend, you may need to change your life.
