On Blogger Burnout

Blogger Burnout

The more you strive to achieve in life, the more responsibilities that end up on your plate. The more on your plate, the more overwhelmed you can become and all of that overwhelm can lead to some serious burnout. For those of us in the blog game burnout not only comes in the form of being overwhelmed with managing a job/school and 40 hours of blogging a week, it can also sneak up on your creativity and strangle your content. You find yourself writing just to get the next post up, deviating from who you are, or just not posting at all. Since life will never stop throwing curveballs long enough for you to “catch up”, you have to make time for you to keep blogger burnout at bay.

The best way to prevent burnout is with proper planning, something I am trying to be less horrible at for the next 6 months. Pulling together a plan that allows you to get all of your posting, social media, marketing, and other blog duties done in a timely manner frees up hours that can be spent on the things you love. For me, that means more time reading, hanging with my dog, binge watching documentaries on Netflix, writing non-blog content, and just existing. Without that essential me time, it is physically impossible to be a consistent creator of quality. As my uncle Karl says:

Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you sacrifice yourself too much there is nothing else you can give and nobody will care for you.

How do you create time and space to keep blogger burnout at bay, because clearly I could use your help?

I feel your pain. Blogging can sometimes get so overwhelming and with the amount of social media and networking you have to do, it can take a lot of time and energy to make it happen! One of the tools I found useful when scheduling is to have a calendar with post-its attached of each blog post. Each post-it is a separate color (one for outfit posts, one for travel posts, one for styling suggestions, etc.) so you can see what you have an make sure it’s balanced and you’re not doing the same type of post everyday. It’s also helpful so if you do get behind or another topic comes up you can rearrange your posts. I also found having a daily schedule so is helpful so I don’t overspend time on social media. I try to plan it so that I only spend a certain amount on each social media platform and when the time is up, I go to the next project.

Also, have you tried the free options to schedule posts on social media with Buffer and Hootsuite? I have used it for Twitter and it has made ALL the difference! I also found a way to schedule posts directly on Facebook and when I get a new phone, I’ll also have Latergramme to help me schedule Instagram posts. If you haven’t used these options yet, try them out to see if it will help you manage everything better so you can spend time taking care of you too.

I love the post-it idea. My new process is to plan everything out using Evernote and batch processing posts so that I take one day a week to write and schedule everything. After doing that, taking 30 minutes or so a day to do social media is a breeze.

I hate getting blogger burnout, or writers block. Sometimes it is best to take a day or two away from the blog(hard to do when addicted to blogging) It is all about getting inspired. For me, when I get into that rut I go on to pinterest to try that recipe that I have been dying to make and then blog about it. Usually works because while I am looking at that I am also looking at other stuff there too. There are some great blogging tips on The Nectar Collective too .

Awesome tips Stephanie. I think taking a day or two away from whatever it is, blogging/writing, to refresh and get inspired is a must. Going to for sure check-out The Nectar Collective.

uuggghh totally feeling this at the moment! and revert into not posting at all -_- but sometimes you gotta prioritize life over blogging I guess, I just try not to beat myself up about it when I am genuinely overwhelmed and need to focus else where- for the other occasions – I go for a stroll along the beach I live at- always centers me and renews my enthusiasm for everything

Here here! You have to prioritize life over blogging because the minute you don’t, your blog content suffers. Love the idea of getting out into nature, it helps keep me focused no matter what’s stressing me out.

Blogger Burnout is so real! Scheduling is definitely the best strategy but even with that, there are many deadlines missed. I think you have to accept that you can only do your best. The other thing is that you can never give up! Keep up the great content!

Thanks Ari! The biggest piece in anything you do is to accept that you can only do your best and nothing more.
