How to Shop Your Closet Like a Pro

how to shop your closet

In an effort to get my money right, I am making a conscious effort to shop less. To do so, I’ve taken the time to master the art of shopping my own closet. It’s easier than it sounds and it only costs time and effort. The bonus is, if you can make what you already have seem exciting and fresh, you’ll get more wear for your money. And who doesn’t want to stretch their wardrobe dollars?

I’ve gathered my top 5 tips to help you shop your closet like a pro.

1. Get Organized!

You can’t wear what you can’t see. Now I’m not saying you should go as far as I do and color-code your closet, then group everything according to sleeve length and style. What I am saying is, take the time to free up some space and give your clothes room to breathe. I suggest investing in streamline hangers to get everything in order.

2. Fix What’s Broken & Tailor What Needs It.

Missing button, hem falling, seam ripped, favorite shirt stained? No problem. Wear and tear happens and doesn’t mean you should throw our something because of it. Just fix it. And while you’re at it, find a good tailor. A good tailor is worth his or her weight in gold.

3. Get Inspired.

I am the queen of using Pinterest and Instagram for style inspo. I search for items I already own or styles that are similar to mine and get to work. Nothing feels better than seeing how someone else would rock your beloved chambray shirt.

4. Fill Up Your Cart.

The trick here is to not hit checkout. Going on a window shopping spree gives you insight into your shopping habits. Take a lot at what you’ve picked. Nine times out of ten you already own similar items. Use the site’s styling to get a fresh take on what you own.

5. Have Fun!

Shopping is fun, generally speaking. It should follow that getting your wardrobe together should be fun too. Break open some bubbly, invite a few friends over and make browsing your closet a mini turn up, SATC style.

Not at all. I screenshot outfits on IG all the time and save them in a folder for when I have no clue what to wear.

Nice tips! I should definitely do a wardrobe in mine soon. I should throw away all not-so-nice clothes and do some shopping. Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

These are great ideas. Although, I am not too much of a shopper but I agree when you say that to shop better one needs to become more organized and not waste too much!

Good tips, thank you! I still have a problem with being organized and reading your post and seeing your photo I realized how important it is to have all clothes in sight. I guess I need more space, eventually a new wardrobe to keep them like you do.
