#StyleHustle | Uniform Dressing

uniform dressing

Much like Jena Lyons and my Uncle Karl, I am a huge fan of uniform dressing. It is how I manage to look effortlessly put together 90% of the time and has been a part of my life since I slipped into a plaid skirt and saddle oxfords in kindergarten. Catholic school uniforms aside, developing a signature look that doesn’t change much from day to day is how you achieve style enlightenment. Seriously. If you look at the wardrobes of the people who dictate seasonal trends, you’ll find closets stocked more like Doug Funny’s.

Developing a uniform that is a clear expression of who you are takes time, effort, and an unshakable confidence in yourself. That is probably why it has taken me a decade to develop a uniform that communicates who I am while shaving tons of time off my morning routine. It’s less like I settled into a style and more like I grew into the woman I wanted to be and this is how that woman dresses. Having a firm grasp on who you are and how your style fits into that is why uniform dressing feels less like a kid in a school uniform and more like a second skin. (Oddly enough, kids who wear uniforms to school grow into the kind of kids who make uniforms look like a second skin. They also become adults who are into uniform dressing but that’s another story for another time.)

None of this is to say that once you find your uniform it cannot change. Over the course of my life, who I am and what I wear to express that has changed over a dozen times. I’ve lived in bright pink Juicy tracksuits and micro mini-skirts with Uggs. I’ve spent years wearing opaque tights as pants under long shirts with flat boots. There was even a time, not that long ago when I cleared out my entire closet and only wore black head to toe. My current uniform is garçonne by day, Kimye West by night. You know, jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, button downs and delicate jewelry for the day time and neutral and tight by night. I’m sure over the next few years, as I change and grown more comfortable with who I am, what I wear will change again. I mean, Karl wasn’t built in a day.

Stay tuned to my Snapchat this week, GreigeMKT, to get a first-hand look at my uniform.
