What to Wear When You’re Feeling Uninspired

finding inspiration

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been working in tech for 2 years or because we’re living through the apocalypse, but I am feeling completely uninspired. I lack the desire to create content and even less to get dressed. There’s no passion, no fire, no defined fall aesthetic to get me going in the morning.

The lack of clearly defined fall aesthetic wouldn’t bother most people. Normal people wake up and get dressed without a second thought. Poor fools, if only life and style were that simple for me. I have had a fall fashion muse since The Craft came out over 20 years ago. Having a muse made it easy to define my fall aesthetic and to try on different versions of me, if only for a season. There’s been an Edie Sedgwick inspired mod me, a jewel-toned art deco me, 70’s baby groupie me, and everything in between. But now, I just don’t know. I feel lost, impotent, and shooketh to my core. While my lack of sartorial inspiration is killing my vibe, I already have a plan to get back in the game. (I am a Virgo after all, we always have a plan.)

How to find your muse when all is lost:

Go to a museum. Museums literally have the word muse as their root. They are cathedrals for pilgrims to explore the human condition and be inspired. They are also the perfect place to spend a gloomy fall day.

Watch a documentary. My Sunday morning ritual includes watching at least one documentary while I ease into my day. Sometimes they are style or design related, usually they aren’t. Whatever the topic, documentaries always give me deeper insight into people and places I wouldn’t ordinarily explore. Having that insight is a major key to getting inspired.

Reconnect with the past. I truly believe that children come into the world knowing exactly what they want to do. Whether their goals are realistic or not is a different story.  That said, reconnecting with the things you loved as a kid is a great way to transform the familiar into something new. Personally, I have always been into dark and fantastic going back to Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and The Neverending Story. Been glam, been goth, been wary of this world. There’s an aesthetic in there somewhere I can feel it.

Hit the gram. I am constantly finding inspiration via Instagram. The trick is to go through the people you follow but rarely see in your feed. You obviously followed them for a reason but IG’s algorithm keeps their creativity hidden under a rock. The explore page is also a great place to, wait for it, explore.

Grab a glossy, read a blog, then check the shows. Magazines, blogs and fashion week recaps are my last resort for style inspo. Designers, magazines, and blogs often draw their inspiration from art, people, decades, and subcultures. Instead of going straight to their interpretation, I always start with the source of the sauce. Sure you can learn a lot from the way Uncle Karl interprets our current socio-political climate for Fendi. You could also learn a lot by distilling your own interpretation for the kids.
