Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen

wear sunscreen

Everyone knows that “black don’t crack.” It is probably why I still look 25 almost 10 years after turning 25. While black girl magic may be preserving my sexy, sunscreen is the real culprit behind my youthful skin.

There is a common misconception that only fair skinned people need sunscreen. People tend to think darker skin equals more than enough natural UV protection. That is not entirely true. The sun does not discriminate, neither do fine lines, wrinkles or skin cancer. If you are not protecting your skin, eventually years of sun worshipping will catch up with you even if your melanin is popping. In fact, if you are like me and have sensitive skin, it may be sooner rather than later. Since you know, brown skin can still burn. This is me speaking from experience. So unless you want to look like a vintage Louis Vitton bag at the ripe old age of 35, you should always wear sunscreen.

The easiest way for me to ensure my skin stays protected is to pick up makeup and moisturizers with added SPF. This way, my morning routine stays streamlined without adding another step I’m bound to forget. When it comes to the rest of my body things get a bit lax. I spend most of my day indoors, so I generally skip sunscreen on my body. I do, however, break it out anytime I will be dealing with prolonged sun exposure. So trips to the beach, the pool, the park, etc all require sunscreen. Now that I’m getting older, I’m taking a tip from Khloé Kardashian’s book and applying sunscreen to my hands. Black may not crack, but your hands will always show signs of aging before any other part of your body. So always, always, always protect the skin on your hands.

Remember, no matter what color your skin is we all need to be careful when soaking up the sun’s rays this summer. How else do you think I plan on staying 25 for at least another decade?
