Wearing Down Your Wardrobe

wearing your wardrobe down

I am always on the lookout for ways to maximize my wardrobe without maxing out my credit cards. After going a little too long without doing my laundry this month, I came up with the perfect solution. Like most people, I only wear about 20% of my wardrobe 80% of the time. What if, instead of immediately washing and re-wearing my most beloved pieces I didn’t? As in, I would wear down my wardrobe forcing myself to get creative with what’s lurking in the back of the closet.

Wearing down your wardrobe is as easy as it sounds, well almost. Much like eating down your pantry, you wait until you absolutely have to before restocking, or in this case washing. Just like eating down your pantry and fridge,  the real work begins after you start running low on your go tos. Then again, that’s the point. Wearing down your wardrobe forces you to confront your purchasing habits while giving your styling muscles a much-needed workout. If done right, you’ll realize  you spend way too much money on black t-shirts and you have more than enough to wear for any occasion.

Over the next 30 days, I am going to practice what I preach and stop spending and start wearing what I have. I’m excited, afraid, and ready to see if I’m as about this personal style life as I claim to be.  To keep me honest, follow me on Instagram (link below) where I’ll be posting my looks. FYI, denim and outerwear will be repeated because I’m gross and barely wash them.

Great solution! Yeah, I have the same issue – I wear normally 20% of my wardrobe too, but I have really nice pieces that I literally adore but no occasion to wear them, haha 🙂

That’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve not bought many clothes since then. I applaud you for what you are doing. I hope it goes well for you. It used to be a problem for me.

What a great post! Brilliant idea. I sure could use this method to see what’s lurking at the back (and bottom) of my wardrobe! I’ve shared this as well. I think lots of us could use this idea! Ree love30

This is a great idea! I think I only wear 10% of my wardrobe at any given time so this exercise would actually benefit me. It’s almost like going shopping in your own wardrobe. 🙂 Fab idea!

Exactly! Most of us have no clue what’s lurking in our wardrobes, sadly.

Love this Idea! I have been trying really hard to start minimizing my wardrobe and moving to a capsule wardrobe. Its taking me Forever to figure out what pieces I know longer need. Im definitely going to use this!!!

Once you go through every piece of your wardrobe I bet you have all/almost all of the pieces you need to pull together a good capsule.

hehe good idea! I recently came back from one year of travelling and moved back to London. Unpacking all my boxes of clothes I found so many things I hadn’t worn for a while but am now super excited to wear again 🙂

What an awesome idea! I’m fairly sure I’m the same and only wear a certain selection of the items in my closet on a daily basis, this is a great way to become more adventurous in your style choices.

Great idea! However, it’ll have to take tremendous discipline on my part…wow! I almost freaking out thinking about it. On the other hand, I barely wash my denims as well..HA! I’ll have to follow to see how you did it for inspo.

The easiest part is not washing my jeans lol. I’ll post some updates in the next week or so to show how creative I get once I’m down to the pieces I barely wear.

It will really force you to think twice before you buy anything which is always great in my book.

Really good idea. Confession: my 10 year old is growing up and now wants his closet space. It is FULL of my clothes. I had the most difficult time moving my items from his closet and simultaneously downsizing. I need to wear down my closet and stop the “oh, it’s on sale, I’ll buy it’ syndrome.

Your post is perfect timing, Anatasia. 🙂 I’m going to try to wear down too.

Awesome Teri! I do the same thing, “oh it’s on sale so..” and I only wear it a few times then poof back of the closet. Good look with wearing it down.

This is a great idea! Will be following your insta to see how you do. I recently had a massive clearout and reduced my wardrobe by 50%. Laundry day can not be missed lol.

That is awesome! I typically clean out my closet once a year only to fill it up with more stuff that I don’t wear. Such a cycle.
